Despite the old saying "you can't judge a book by its cover," appearance does count in the workplace. It's a well-known fact that those who look like management material have a leg up on those who don't when it comes to career advancement. Giorgenti specializes in business and professional dressing for men and women alike.

You should always dress two or three levels above your current position. For women, that's especially important because by and large we are still fighting for true equality in the workplace. If a woman doesn't consciously dress to project an aura of professionalism and authority, she may not be considered for advancement.

Giorgenti acknowledges that it is far more difficult for women to dress professionally. For most men, a good suit is like a suit of armor: it's something they put on to go to battle in the corporate world, and it's worth spending a little more to get quality. But many women who wouldn't think twice about paying several hundred dollars for evening wear find it far more difficult to spend that kind of money on office attire. They're thinking about saving for Johnny's braces, or Jenny's summer camp. It's a noble sentiment, but so is doing everything you can to improve your position. That's a lesson we still have to learn.

  1. Know your colors--Everyone has a palette of colors that work best for them. If you aren't sure what yours are, talk to friends or a professional consultant who can help you find the colors that compliment your skin, hair and eyes.

  2. Dress for the occasion--You don't always have to wear "power clothes" but you should always look professional. Think about who you will work with each day, and what you want to accomplish. Do you need to stand out from the crowd? A bright color like a red or cobalt blue might be in order. Will you negotiate with a vendor or work with top management? Perhaps a darker, more conservative suit will work best. What if you need to get everybody working together, and establish a friendly working relationship? Think earth tones and environmental shades. Plan your next week's wardrobe when you check your calendar on Friday.

  3. Invest in quality--Not every woman can afford a $500 suit. But it pays to buy the best quality you can. Better clothes last longer and look good longer. Consider it as an investment in your future.you deserve it.

  4. It's casual day, not casualty day!- Here's one place where women and men alike are still struggling to find a balance. Even on casual days, your outfit must maintain a sense of integrity and professionalism. This is the day to take out the pant suits, skirt sets, unconstructed jackets and nicer pants, sweaters and blouses. Leave the jeans, polo shirts and the like at home for the weekend wear. And don't forget to "finish the look," even if the look is casual. Remember: dress as if someone important might drop by unexpectedly.

Whether a woman is a secretary or a manager, she still should dress with a purpose in mind. Knowing you are dressed right increases your self-confidence. The right outfit alone won't help you get ahead, but it does help make sure people see you as a powerful, capable person--and that's the first step toward career advancement.
